Oregon Acupuncture Association – A 30 Year History
The Oregon Acupuncture Association was formed 30 years ago. Nung Kuo
worte the first “proposal” on Feb. 2, 1974. Yuet Sun Chan, Chon Gee Shen, and
Nung Kuo met in preparation on March 23, 1975 and OAA officially became an
organization on August 28, 1975. Wai Tak Cheung, LAc, who is now retired, is
the only familiar name amongst the acupuncturists who are listed on the “OAA
History” sheet dated 1975-76. Early meetings addressed “the system of the
supervising physician”, since acupuncture was only legal if done under the
supervision of an MD! Getting moxa legalized and insurance coverage were
other issues. They held a seminar in 1976 with “26 seats.” In 1976, Sen.
Wallace Carson and Rep. Gordon McPherson, who sponsored SB 489 (likely the
bill legalizing acupuncture) were named “Perpetual Fathers of Oregon
Acupuncture.” So far we have come in 30 years! To Wai Tak Cheung and the
other founders, we are very grateful for your courage in forming our organization
and working for acupuncture so long ago.
